HISTORY OF CYPRESSES

The first is that at the beginning of the 20th century, a certain noble family brought 32 trees from California and planted them in memory of their dead son.

There are several explanations of how they appeared on the Black Sea coast

Another is that these trees were planted in the 1930s as part of a scientific experiment. 32 trees planted in the lake grew well, and over the years reached almost 30 meters.
Currently, this swamp cypress grove is listed in the IUCN Red List.

This place is very picturesque

The lake itself and the valley are framed by foothills, protecting it from the wind and creating a special climatic zone. Around the lake on the slopes you can find sessile oaks, many subspecies of juniper, and hornbeam trees.

On the shore, under branchy pines, you can have a picnic, swim and go fishing. It's possible to get close to the cypresses on boats or catamarans and take amazing photos. You can also take a horse ride around the lake.

Drought

When the lake dries up, the cypress trees are tested for strength. Such was the year 2020, when a snowless winter and a dry spring left the cypress trees without water.

The peculiarity of these species' wood is the special resistance to water and decay processes. And without water, the roots, the respiratory organ of plants, suffer.

The bare roots had to be watered using fire trucks. Once a week, 12.5 tons of water were poured under the cypresses.
And tourists were advised not to approach them, so as not to tramp the ground under them and not to bring any infection.

In spring they are light green, in summer they are a rich malachite color, and in autumn the crowns of trees shimmer with all shades of red and burgundy

Lake Sukko is located 14 km from Anapa. The most convenient way to get there is by public bus No. 109 (Anapa-Sukko) and get off at the final stop "Lukomorye".
